Businesses donate food in support of World Food Day

14 October 2016

In support of World Food Day, taking place on Sunday, 16 October 2016, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) together with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is hosting a public event today at the Nkume Sports Field in uMlalazi Local Municipality in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal. The minister of DAFF, Mr Senzeni Zokwana is also in attendance. Various sponsors, including small-scale farmers and larger companies like Sea Harvest, donated food and products. A food mountain (above and below) was built with all the donated items, and the food collected will be distributed to local communities after today’s event. To highlight the plight of 870 million undernourished people in the world, World Food Day is observed annually on 16 October. The special day also commemorates the founding of the FAO in 1945.
