[CAPTION] Inako (surname withheld) recovers from heart surgery in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.
When Inako was born on 21 September 2016 at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in East London, Eastern Cape, doctors realised that she had a hole in her heart. She was immediately transferred to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town for surgery. Following her operation Inako spent time recovering in the hospital’s Paediatric ICU where she received excellent care from doctors and nurses who used state of the art medical equipment.
One of the recent purchases for the Hospital’s ICU is a very specialised machine called a Giraffe Warmer. Thanks to a R300 000 donation from Sea Harvest’s ‘Kids for Kids’ initiative, the hospital was able to purchase the machine which not only keeps patients like Inako warm, but can also monitor weight, and perform x-rays.
The Children’s Hospital Trust CEO, Louise Driver said, "Keeping tiny patients warm is imperative to their recovery and thanks to Sea Harvest’s support many babies like lnako will be able to recover in the Giraffe Warmer while in ICU. We are grateful to donors like Sea Harvest that enable us to fund important projects like this that ultimately help save children’s lives."
This is the seventh year that Sea Harvest has run the ‘Kids for Kids’ initiative where a portion of the sales of selected Sea Harvest crumbed fish products are donated to The Children’s Hospital Trust. Amongst the products are fish fingers, a firm favourite with kids. Parents can ensure that their little ones are eating healthily and, at the same time, contribute to making a difference in the lives of young patients at the hospital. To date, over R2.1 million has been donated by Sea Harvest to the Trust through the initiative. Funds have been allocated to the Surgical Skills Unit, an upgrade of the general medical ward, the radiology complex, a child safe centre, the weekend waitlist surgeries and the paediatric ICU.
Sea Harvest Sales and Marketing Director, Konrad Geldenhuys, says, "It is a privilege to continue partnering with The Children’s Hospital Trust for the seventh consecutive year. By supporting the vital work of medical staff at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, our Kids for Kids initiative is truly saving lives."
